BROWS
To say that brow looks have evolved over the years would be an understatement. From the pencil-thin, downturned brows that defined the silent film star era to the fuller, fluffier brows of the 50s and 60s and the sculpted, snatched arches of the 2010s, eyebrows have commanded attention with a variety of shapes and styles.
Brow trends will undoubtedly continue to shift, but here’s one thing we know for certain: a natural-looking brow will always be in style.
The natural brow look gives you a soft, effortlessly groomed effect that enhances your existing shape without feeling heavy or drawn on. Instead of filling every inch, you add definition only where you need it. With the right products and a few simple techniques, you can learn how to fill in your eyebrows naturally and command attention yourself.
Why Natural Brows Hit Different
Natural-looking brows do three important things:
- They frame your face without adding extra weight
- They draw subtle attention to the eyes
- They complement any makeup style
Whether you’re going full glam or no makeup makeup, filled brows that follow your natural shape work well with everything. That’s because you’re adding color only where it’s needed, using hair-like strokes, and letting your actual brows do most of the work.
The result? Brows that complete your overall look without overwhelming your brow area.
Fun Fact
Eyebrow trends have come and gone in cycles throughout history. For example, Ancient Egyptians darkened their brows dramatically, creating a look that’s similar to the 2010s sharp brow. During the Middle Ages, no brows at all was the height of beauty—the thin brows of the 1990s must have taken a page out of this book!
A Step-By-Step Guide to Filled-In Brows
While the goal is fluffy, filled-in brows that sing “I woke up like this,” you’re going to have to do a little more than just wake up. We’ve broken the process down into five easy-to-follow steps.
Step 1: Pick Your Shade
When selecting your shade, go lighter than your instincts tell you to. The right shade should make your brows look denser, but not completely different. A shade that’s too dark can look harsh and drawn on, no matter how well you blend.
For the best results, try to match your brow color exactly or go one shade lighter if you’re unsure.
Step 2: Brush First, Fill Second
Use a clean, dry brow spoolie to brush your brows upward and outward. Doing this will reveal exactly where you have gaps and sparse patches. Not to mention, it trains your hairs to lie in a natural-looking groomed position.
If you try to fill brows that haven't been brushed first, you'll just end up adding color over hairs that point in every direction.
Brush up, then out, and take stock of what you’re working with before you start filling.
Step 3: Spot-Fill
If you want your brows to look natural rather than drawn on, focus only on the sparse areas that need attention. These are usually at the front of the brow, the arch, or the tail. These areas tend to benefit the most from extra color.
Use short, light, upward strokes in the direction of your natural hair growth. Remember: You’re mimicking hairs rather than drawing lines, so keep the pressure featherlight. You can always layer more.
Now, here’s the important part: Leave the rest of your brow alone. The more you try to “complete” a brow by filling every inch, the less natural your result will look.
Step 4: Define the Edges, Then Spoolie Again
A precise stroke along the underside of the tail creates lift. A crisp edge at the arch adds definition. Keep both subtle to create a gentle frame, not a harsh border.
Then, run your spoolie through your brows one final time. Doing this softens any strokes that came in too heavy, distributes the color evenly, and makes even the most precisely applied product look like it grew there.
Step 5: Set It and Forget It
A brow gel locks all of your hard work into place. It holds every hair exactly where you left it and adds a groomed finish. To maintain that natural look, use a clear gel, like Benefit’s 24-Hour Brow Setter. Simply brush it through in short upward strokes for a 24-hour* longwear, flake-free hold.
