So, you want to get your brows shaped professionally. Great call—those beauties deserve expert tending! But between eyebrow waxing vs threading, which one do you choose? Is one better than the other? Will one hurt way more?
First, we love that you’re asking. Brows are literally our thing, and 4,500+ trained Brow Experts worldwide will back us up on that.
Second, one service isn’t necessarily better than the other—it all depends on what you’re looking for, your skin sensitivity, and your general preferences.
Let’s get into eyebrow waxing vs threading to help you figure out which service is right for you.
What’s Actually Happening to Your Brows?
Before we talk about their differences, let’s review what these two methods have in common: They’re both removing hair from the root.
Not cutting it. Not shaving it. Pulling it out from the follicle. That’s why both options give you results that last weeks, not days.
The real difference is in how they do it–and that “how” matters a lot depending on your skin and your brow goals.
Waxing: The Brow Shaping Speed Round
Waxing is exactly what it sounds like. Your brow specialist applies warm wax to the areas where you want hair removed, presses on a strip, and then quickly removes it, taking the hair with it. The whole appointment takes about 10 minutes.
Think of waxing as the "get it all at once" approach to eyebrow shaping. It’s especially helpful for removing fine, soft hairs.
But here’s the most important thing to note about wax: It contacts your skin directly. If you're using retinoids, acids, or prescription skincare, it's really important to tell your Brow & Beauty Expert before your appointment. Those ingredients can make skin more sensitive, and waxing on top of them is usually a no-go.
It’s also important to mention that your brow hair needs to be about 1/8 inch long for the wax to grip. So, if you've been over-plucking lately, grow things out a little first.
Threading: The Precision Play
When you get your eyebrows threaded, your brow artist takes a single piece of twisted cotton thread and uses it to pull individual hairs from the follicle with incredible precision. There are no products or chemicals involved, just thread and skill.
That makes this method ideal if you have sensitive skin, are using active skincare ingredients, prescription skincare, or have recently had a laser treatment.
Threading does take a little longer than waxing–usually around 15 minutes for fully detailed work–but the resulting crisp, clean lines are more than worth it, especially if you want a more defined look.
Fun Fact
While eyebrow threading is newer in the West, it’s rooted in centuries-old Eastern traditions. In some countries, like Iran, it’s even tied to significant milestones, like marriage.
Okay But… Which One Hurts the Most?
Both methods remove hair from the root, so there’s going to be some sensation. We’re not going to sugarcoat the experience and call it a spa moment, but we’re also not going to call it agony, because when done by a pro (ahem us) it isn’t.
Here’s essentially what you can expect:
- Waxing comes in fast bursts. Rip. It’s over. Rip. It’s over. The sting is quick and fades almost immediately. Most people say it’s totally manageable once you know what to expect.
- Threading feels a little different. It’s more like a continuous rolling sensation as the thread moves across your skin. It’s not intense, but it does last a little longer than a single wax strip.
Both methods get easier with regular appointments once your hair becomes finer and your skin gets used to it. And if you’re nervous, just tell your Brow Expert before you start. They can help talk you through the experience and make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.
How Long Will Your Brows Stay Snatched?
Both waxing and threading can give you fierce brows for about 3-4 weeks, though the exact timing depends on your unique hair growth. Some people can stretch it to 5-6 weeks, while others are back in 2-3.
The more consistently you keep up with appointments, the finer your regrowth gets over time.
So… Which One Should You Choose?
Still not sure between waxing vs threading?
- Go with waxing if – You want to be in and out fast, you’re dealing with fine, fluffy hairs around your brows, your skin isn’t particularly sensitive, and you’re not taking any prescription skin care or retinoids. Just make sure to avoid exfoliating or using heavy moisturizers around that area right before your appointment.
- Go with threading if – You want a super defined arch, your skin is more sensitive, or you're currently using retinoids, acids, or prescriptions in your skincare.
