The Secret to Longwearing Makeup
Before we get into the how, let’s talk about the why—as in why does makeup fade in the first place?
Like you, your skin works hard all day. It’s busy producing oil, sweat, and moisture. When makeup sits directly on top of all that activity with no buffer, it starts to break down. Oil can make makeup get smudgey and smeary, sweat loosens adhesion, and even touching your face transfers product off of your skin and onto your fingers. At the same time, environmental factors like heat and humidity can speed the whole process up.
So, what actually keeps makeup in place? A routine that helps your makeup grip harder and protects it from the elements.
The three key steps of that routine are:
● Prep – This gives your makeup a clean, hydrated, and primed surface to bond with.
● Application – Light layering allows products to grip your skin instead of sitting on top of it.
● Setting – A setting product can lock makeup in place and helps it resist oil, sweat and slippage.
By knowing how to approach each of these steps, you can feel confident that your makeup will last all day long.
Step 1: Prep Your Base
Prep is the single biggest factor in how long your makeup lasts. Without a clean, well-hydrated surface, your makeup is essentially sitting on a layer of oil, dead skin, and yesterday’s skincare, which is basically a slip-and-slide for your makeup.
Cleanse
Luckily, a quick cleanse is all you need to clear away excess oil, dead skin, and any leftover product from the day before.
The POREfessional Good Cleanup pore-purifying foaming cleanser can help you get through this first step squeaky clean. By bubbling into a refreshing foam, this gel cleanser easily sweeps away any buildup standing between your skin and your makeup. It also visibly refines pores, so you’re left with a smoother, makeup-ready surface.
Moisturize
After cleansing, apply The POREfessional Smooth Sip lightweight smoothing moisturizer to hydrate & balance your skin for up to 12 hours.* Make sure to give it some time to absorb before moving on. If you layer too quickly, you'll get pilling and patchiness before your foundation even hits your face.

Prime
Primer is like the base coat of your makeup. It reduces the look of pores and fine lines, visibly smooths texture, and creates a surface your foundation can latch onto. To apply it, deposit a pea-sized amount and blend outward from the center of your face. Wait another minute for it to set before adding foundation.
Since different primer formulas are designed for different looks and skin concerns, you have some options for this step:
● The POREfessional Primer – Suitable for any skin type, this primer smooths the look of skin and blurs pores, leaving a natural finish.
● The POREfessional Matte Primer – Best for shine control and a matte finish, this primer features rosehip extract to help reduce excess skin oil and niacinamide to hydrate the skin.
Step 2: Apply With a Light Hand
While it may sound counterintuitive, more product does not mean longer wear. Instead, it means more opportunity to cake, crease, and slide.
To avoid this, start with a thin layer of foundation and build coverage only where you actually need it. Use a damp sponge or brush to press the product into the skin rather than swiping it across the surface. It also helps to opt for a longwearing foundation like The POREfessional Foundation smoothing & blurring matte foundation which lasts 24 hours*
The same goes for concealer: Dot it where you need it and blend with a light pressing motion.
Once your face makeup is in place, you can move on to your brows, eyes, and lips, as needed.

Step 3: Lock Everything In
Now that you’ve prepped your skin and applied your makeup, it’s time to seal the deal so that everything stays put.
This is where setters come in. You have two types to work with:
● Setting Powder – Use a setting powder like The POREfessional Power Powder to absorb excess oil and keep your base from shifting. Focus on your T-zone and under your eyes during application, since these areas produce the most oil and see the most creasing.
● Setting Spray – A setting spray like The POREfessional Super Setter creates an invisible film over your makeup that shields it from oil, sweat, and humidity. Some setting sprays (like ours!) even blur the appearance of pores. To apply, spray in an X across your face, then a T from forehead to chin, holding the bottle about eight inches away from you. You’ll know you did it right if you’re left with a slightly dewy appearance.
Protect Your Look Throughout The Day
Beyond your basic routine, a few simple habits can extend your makeup’s staying power:
● Avoid touching your face – When you do this, the oils in your fingers transfer to your makeup.
● Carry blotting papers (and press them—don’t wipe) – If you experience some midday shine, press the blotting paper against the oily areas of your face. Wiping will smear your makeup and create patchiness.
● Regularly check expiration or “period after opening” dates – Old makeup products don’t adhere the way they should, so if your foundation feels off or your primer has changed texture, it’s probably time to replace them.
● Keep a mini setting spray in your bag – …Or in your car, or in your desk at work. Sometimes, a midday spritz can be just what you need to wake up your skin and refresh your look.
